The board authorizes the College’s existing administration to act as the executive management on its behalf.
Academic Recognition
The College was granted academic recognition in 1996, authorizing it to confer B.Ed. degrees. In 2003, the College’s Academic Council began operating following approval by the Council for Higher Education (CHE). The Academic Council is responsible for developing the academic aspects of the College’s activities, including the development of M.Ed. programs.
The History of Kaye College
Kaye College traces its roots to 1954, when it was founded as the “One-year Seminary for Rural Teachers in the Negev”. Originally located in the Meshek Ezer neighborhood (now Neve Noy) in Be’er Sheva, its primary mission was to alleviate the severe shortage of educators in transit camps (ma’abarot) and immigrant villages (moshavim) throughout the Negev.
The seminary was established by Arie Simon, the Southern District Superintendent (1952-1964), who is credited with laying the foundations of the Negev’s education system. In its early days, the seminary or midrasha was housed in twelve single-story structures, which Be’er Sheva Mayor David Tuviyahu allocated to Arie Simon for classrooms and dormitories.
In 1960, after operating in various temporary locations, the Negev’s first teacher-training institution moved into its own building in Neighborhood C (Shikun Gimmel) as was renamed the “State Seminary for Teachers and Kindergarten Teachers.” The institution grew rapidly. By the early 1970s, it began training teachers for most teaching tracks, including specialized programs for immigrant teachers and the Bedouin sector.
In 1982, the institution moved to its current campus and was renamed “Kaye College of Education”. Concurrently, the College completed a merger with the State Institution for Physical Education Teachers, which was founded in 1964 by the late Dr. Eli Friedman.
